Dhaka, Aug 20 (UNB) – City dwellers gathered at the National Eidgah on the city’s High Court premises, other Eidgahs across the city and elsewhere in the country for saying special Eid prayers on Monday morning.
The main Eid jamaat (congregation) was held at the National Eidgah at 8:30 am.
President Zillur Rahman, Chief Justice Md Mozzammel Hossain, ministers, state ministers, judges of the Supreme Court, members of parliament, senior political leaders, diplomats from various Muslim countries and senior civil and military officials offered prayers at the main Eid jamaat.
Two Eid congregations were held at the Dhaka University playground and the south plaza of Jatiya Sangsad. Besides, Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City Corporation arranged 361 Eid congregations in 90 wards of the capital.
The country's biggest Eid congregation was held at Sholakhia Eidgah in Kishoreganj at 10 am with some 3 lakh devotees joining the congregation conducted by Maulana M Farid Uddin Masud.
The special prayers marked the start of a three-day celebration of Eid after 30 days of fasting during Ramadan.
“We woke up early, have had our bath and offered prayers at our local mosque,” Engineer Mujibur Rahman told UNB. “This day is really special for us…we’re very happy after one whole month of fasting and praying,” he added.
The Muslim holy month devoted to dawn-to-dusk fasting, prayers, good deeds and abstinence from worldly pleasures culminates with the holiday of Eid al-Fitr.
Hundreds of police patrolled the city to ensure the security of the Eid devotees during Eid.
Many people took advantage of the long weekend and drove to other parts of the country as part of their celebrations.
Eid greetings flooded communication networks be it in the form of text messages, emails or and instant messages. On social media sites too, Eid greetings were dominantly shared and displayed.
