Dinajpur, Aug 5 (UNB) – Fifty-two people were sued on Saturday night in connection with the last two days of violence over the renovation of a mosque in Chirirbandar upazila.
Chirirbandar thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tariqul Islam said many other unidentified people have also been sued in the case, which was filed by Sub-inspector (SI) Aminul Islam.
Hamida Banu, owner of the land where the bamboo-built mosque had been renovated, has been named as the main accused in the case.
Advocate Animesh Roy, advisor of District Puja Celebration Committee, also lodged a general diary (GD) in this connection.
Seven people were injured, 11 houses were set ablaze and looted in a series of clashes between the members of Hindu and Muslim communities over the renovation of the mosque on the land, owned by Hamida Banu, at Bolaibazar on Friday and Saturday.
The district administration announced that they will give cash assistance worth Tk 5,000, 20 kgs of rice and clothes to each family affected in the clashes.
Police said 20 platoon police, five platoon BGB and Rab have been deployed for maintaining law and order in the area.
The local administration formed a one-member committee with additional district magistrate Abdul Malek to investigate the incident. The committee will submit its report within a week.
Abdul Malek said the situation at Bolaibazar was peaceful on Sunday.
Two local lawmakers---Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and Abul Hossain Mahmud Ali—visited the spot today (Sunday).
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rashidul Maruf Kabir on Friday night declared Section 144 at Bolaibazar, which was in force from 6am to 6pm on Saturday.
The authorities on Saturday afternoon extended the emergency section and kept it in force for an indefinite period.
