Dhaka, Aug 5 (UNB) – BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said they are ready to sit with the government to work out who will head the interim administration to oversee the next national election.
“BNP believes in dialogue. We can sit with the government to settle the issue of the chief adviser to the interim government. But the Prime Minister will have to declare first that the next election will be held under a non-party caretaker administration,” he said while addressing a demonstration in front of BNP's Nayapaltan central office in the city.
Dhaka city unit of the BNP-led 18 party alliance organised the agitation to protest the brazen interference in the Judiciary and lodging ‘false’ cases and forming charges against the top leaders of the alliance.
Speaking at the programme, Fakhrul said the government is using the state machineries to suppress the opposition after having failed to face them politically.
He said the filing of ‘false’ cases against the senior opposition leaders and indicting them for false allegations without giving them the chance of self-defence are the glaring examples of the government’s interference in the Judiciary.
Calling upon the government to withdraw the ‘false’ cases against the 18-party alliance leaders, he said the movement cannot be stopped by lodging cases.
Reiterating his party’s firm stance on the issue, the BNP spokesman said the next polls must be held under a non-party caretaker government. “BNP will not participate in any polls under a party government.”
Rejecting the Prime Minister’s small cabinet proposal, the BNP leader said her proposal will not help overcome the ongoing political crisis. ”You’ll remain there as the Prime Minster and your colleagues will hold the same positions during the elections, then what will we do? Will we beat the drum? This can’t be allowed,” Fakhrul said pointing at the premier.
In the wake of the BNP’s longstanding demand for restoration of the caretaker government system, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in a recent interview with BBC, suggested formation of a small cabinet with representation from the BNP before the next general election. She also asked BNP to come up with their proposal in parliament in this regard.
Mentioning that Sheikh Hasina had also rejected such a proposal in 1996 when BNP was in power, Fakhrul said the premier is playing a dodging game like football over the CG issue.
Fakhrul also urged the government to restore the caretaker government system in the interest of democracy. Or else, he warned they would wage an irresistible movement after Eid to force the regime to meet their demand.
Chaired by Dhaka city unit BNP member secretary Abdus Salam, the programme was addressed, among others, by BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, chairperson’s adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Jubo Dal president Moazzem Hossain Alal, Jamaat acting secretary general Prof Mujibur Rahman, NDP secretary general Alamgir Majumder and Swechchhasebok Dal organising secretary Shafiul Bari Babu.
