Dhaka, July 31 (UNB) - The High Court on Tuesday slapped an injunction on the ongoing movement of the teachers and students of Buet against the Vice Chancellor and Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university.

A High Court bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Mohammad Khurshid Alam Sarker passed the order following a public interest litigation writ filed by HC lawyer Yunus Ali Akhand challenging the legality of the ongoing movement.

It also declared illegal the 44-day vacation declared by the Buet authorities.

The court also issued a rule asking eight people, including the Education Secretary, the Buet VC, the president of Buet Teachers’ Association, to reply within four weeks why the ongoing movement at the university would not be declared illegal.

The Inspector General of Police and the DMP Commissioner were also asked to maintain law and order on the Buet campus.

The Buet teachers have been staging sit-in since July 11 to press home their 16-point demand, including the resignation of its VC Nazrul Islam and Pro-VC Habibur Rahman.

A total of 24 teachers, including the heads of all faculties, departments and institutes, resigned on the same day to express their solidarity with the movement.

The university authorities later on July 11 declared the 44-day holiday.

The agitating teachers gave the government until July 30 to meet their demands.

Talking to UNB over phone, Advocate Yunus Ali said today’s HC ruling paved the way for the reopening of Buet as the 44-day vacation and the ongoing movement in the university were declared illegal.
