
Dhaka, July 31 (UNB) – A Dhaka court on Tuesday indicted 46 opposition leaders, including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, for torching a vehicle during hartal hours on April 29.
The court also issued a warrant for the arrest of BNP leaders Sadek Hossain Khoka, Amanullah Aman and Nazimuddin Alam rejecting their time petition in the case.
The court of Metropolitan Speedy Trial Magistrate Harun-or-Rashid also fixed August 7 for starting trial of the accused in the case filed by Tejgaon police for torching a bus in front of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) during the hartal enforced by BNP-led 18-party alliance.
The judge framed the charges against the 46 accused rejecting an adjournment petition filed by the defence counsels amid chaos as pro-opposition lawyers instantly rejected the order in a packed courtroom questioning fairness of the judgment.
Fakhrul and 38 other opposition leaders were present in the dock when the charges were pressed against them that also prompted angry demonstration from pro-BNP lawyers outside the courtroom.
The lawyers instantly rejected the order of the judge questioning his neutrality and brought out a procession on the court premises.
Scores of pro-opposition lawyers who gathered joined the procession that paraded different streets of Dhaka Judge’s Court area chanting slogans against the judge and the government.
In the morning, the pro BNP-lawyers showed no-confidence in Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Erfan Ullah after he rejected two petitions of the defence lawyers.
In the no-confidence petition, the defence lawyers claimed that they will not get justice from the court as it rejected their petitions seeking adjournment of the hearing on charge-framing in the case.
In the wake of their protest, the metropolitan magistrate sent the matter to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court to decide the next course of action.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Bikash Kumar Saha sent the case to the court of Magistrate Harun-or-Rashid who framed charges against the 18-party alliance leaders and issued arrest warrant for the three.
