Dhaka, July 31 (UNB) – Production in Karnaphuli Fertiliser Company Limited (Kafco) and Ashuganj Fertiliser Factory, now closed due to gas crisis, will resume by August 10, said Industries Minister Dilip Barua on Tuesday.
“Efforts are on. We hope production in the two fertiliser factories will resume by August 10,” he told UNB over phone.
An official at Kafco said production in the factory remained suspended for over five months due to gas crisis.
Earlier, after an inter-ministerial meeting at Shilpa Bhaban, Barua told reporters that the factories will go into production soon ensuring the required gas supply.
He also said the other closed urea factories will gradually go into production which will help build up fertiliser stock for the next year.
Agriculture Secretary Monjur Hossain, Industries Secretary KH Masud Siddiqui, Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) Chairman Golam Rabbani, Additional Industries Secretary Monsur Ali Sikdar and senior officials of the related ministries and Petrobangla were present.
The government has fixed the demand of urea at 25 lakh metric tonnes for the current fiscal year of which 10 lakh metric tonnes will be produced locally, the meeting was informed.
The government will procure 4 lakh metric tonnes of urea from Kafco, 2 lakh metric tonnes from foreign sources and import 9 lakh metric tonnes through state-to-state deals.
The meeting discussed issues relating to ensuring adequate supply of urea during the coming the Irri-Boro peak season.
At the meeting, Barua said the government has been able to ensure the smooth supply of fertiliser over the last three years, and asked the officials concerned to play their due role in maintaining its continuity.
