Dhaka, July 28 (UNB) – Cases of dengue, an infectious tropical viral fever, are increasing in the capital city during the current season.
A total of 73 dengue cases were reported up to July 25 while some 10 dengue cases reported in June last, according to the Health Services control room.
Although the incidence of dengue is seen on the rise in July this year, still it was comparatively less then the previous years, Prof Dr Mahmudur Rahman, director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), told UNB on Saturday.
Describing the present situation to be at tolerable level, he said reporting of dengue cases started this month (July) from the first week.
A total of 37 dengue patients have been admitted to the Red Crescent Holy Family Medical College Hospital in the city till today (Saturday).
According to IEDCR notice on dengue situation in Dhaka City, the highest yearly peak of some 691 dengue cases was reported in December 2011 since 2007.
Updating the dengue cases from 2007-2011, the IEDCR data showed that the peak of 183 dengue cases was recorded in August 2007 while the peak of 473 cases in July 2008, 188 cases in September 2009 and 183 cases in August 2010.
Dengue is an infectious tropical disease caused by the dengue virus and borne by Aedes mosquito. Its symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash similar to measles.
In a small proportion of cases, the disease develops into the life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage, or into dengue shock syndrome, where a dangerously low blood pressure occurs.
