News - With Abul gone, Muhith wants WB to review its decision
Dhaka, July 24 (UNB) – A day after the resignation of Syed Abul Hossain from the cabinet, Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Tuesday said the government is now hopeful of getting the World Bank’s promised fund for the Padma Bridge project.

“We’re trying to incorporate the proposals of the World Bank,” he said while replying to queries from reporters at his secretariat office.

Muhith said Syed Abul Hossain resigned from the cabinet as part of fulfilling the conditions of the World Bank though allegation of corruption was not proved against him.

He also hoped that there would be no further problem in getting the fund from the World Bank for the Padma Bridge project.

Earlier, on Monday, Information and Communication Technology Minister Syed Abul Hossain submitted his resignation to the Prime Minister, paving the way for the government to revive the financial arrangement with the World Bank for the Padma Bridge project.

He was removed from the Communications Ministry and given the charge of ICT ministry on December 5 last year after the World Bank brought graft allegation against him and suspended its $ 1.2 billion loan for the $ 2.9 billion Padma Bridge project.

The WB in September last year suspended its promised $1.2 billion funding for the country's biggest infrastructure project.

Construction of the 6.15-kilometre bridge became uncertain when the World Bank cancelled its loan agreement last month saying that all of its conditions were not met.
