Dhaka, July 23 (UNB) –US ambassador in Dhaka Dan W Mozena on Monday said America is partnering with Bangladesh in building a vibrant, free media, as strong media is essential for the success of democracy.

He said this at the launching ceremony of Dhaka University’s Television and Film Studies Department at Nawab Nabab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban.

Chaired by vice chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Dr AASM Arefin Siddiue, the function was addressed, among others, by chief justice M Muzammel Hossain, president of International Association for Media and Communication Research Prof. Dr, Janet Wasko and chairman of Television and Film Studies Dr AJM Shafiul Islam.

Speaking on the occasion, Mozena said America has trained dozens of Bangladesh’s leading journalists in the United States to improve their skill in journalism.

He said the young media professionals who emerge from this department will have the values, skills and capabilities to use the powerful tools of television and film to inform the people, engage the people.

The US Ambassador said these media professionals will be able to use Television and Film to tell the nation to the world as Bangladesh’s rich culture, great history, tremendous development opportunities, and most specially the wondrous people, whose energy, dynamism, creativity, entrepreneurial skills and resilience are truly unsurprised.

He said the media experts will also be to use television and film to expose corruption, malfeasance, incomplete, laziness throughout society.

“We have collaborated with Bangladesh Centre for Development Journalism and Communications, with the news network and the University of Oklahoma to train over 150 women journalists on investigative journalism, social media and other key reporting skills,” he said.

Mozena said he believes the potential for academic and research exchange between American and Bangladesh educational institutions is enormous.
“Already the American universities like Columbia are collaborating with Dhaka University to study groundwater arsenic and earth quake monitoring,” he said.
