News - 25 pro-BNP lawyers get permanent bail
Dhaka, July 22 (UNB) – A Dhaka court on Sunday granted permanent bail to 25 pro-BNP lawyers in a case filed for unleashing vandalism and creating chaos at a lower court on May 22.

Judge of the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court Shahidul Islam passed the order when the lawyers prayed for permanent bail.

The court also fixed July 30 for charge-framing hearing.

The High Court on May 24 granted 10-day ad interim anticipatory bail to the lawyers, loyal to the main opposition, upon their surrender before it and asked them to surrender before the designated trial court before the expiry of the bail period.

On June 3, the lower court granted them bail until June 19 on their surrender before the court in compliance with the High Court order.

Later, on June 19, the same court extended bail term of the lawyers until July 22.

On May 31, police pressed charges in the case.

Investigation officer of the case Abidul Islam, who is also a sub-inspector of Kotwali Police Station, submitted the charge sheet under the Speedy Trial (Law and Order Disruption) Act against the 25 lawyers to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka.

The pro-BNP lawyers include Dhaka Bar Association president Borhanuddin and its former president Sanaullah Miah.

Members of Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum on May 22 boycotted proceedings at four trial courts in Dhaka protesting a court order sending BNP MP Mahbub Uddin Khokon who faces a case for torching a vehicle near the Prime Minister’s Office on April 29 to jail.

More than 100 pro-BNP lawyers, led by advocates Sanaullah Miah and Masud Ahmed Talukder, brought out a procession on the court premises.

The agitating lawyers reportedly vandalised windowpanes at the District Judge’s Court and Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court during the demonstration.

Later, a case was filed with Kotwali Police Station against 99 people for the incidents under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act. Twenty-nine people were named as accused in the case.
