CAIRO, JULY 18 (AP/UNB) - A U.S. military official says the head of U.S. Central Command has met with the head of Egypt's powerful military council in Cairo.

The official did not disclose details of the meeting between commander Gen. James Mattis and Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, whose council holds considerable power in Egypt even after a new president took office.

The official says Mattis met separately with Egypt's military chief of staff, Sami Anan Wednesday. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.

Over the weekend, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton urged President Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood and Tantawi to work together. The two are in a power struggle.

The U.S. provides about $1.3 billion annually in military aid to Egypt.
