
Dhaka, July 18 (UNB) – Admitting some lapses, Commerce Minister GM Quader on Wednesday said the government will strongly monitor the market to keep the prices of essentials at ‘justifiable’ level during Ramadan.
He called upon the traders not to raise the prices of basic commodities illogically and sought their cooperation in keeping the market stable.
The Commerce Minister was speaking at a function at the DCCI conference room, marking the launching of the World Trade Directory: Bangladesh, Connecting the World’.
Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), Bangladesh Tariff Commission (BTC) and Business Initiative Leading Development (BUILD) jointly arranged the event with DCCI President Asif Ibrahim in the chair.
Commerce Secretary M Ghulam Hussain and Chairman of Bangladesh Tariff Commission Dr M Mozibur Rahman spoke on the occasion.
Speaking as the chief guest, GM Quader said this time the consumers have started buying Ramadan essentials much before, creating a supply crisis in the market and causing a bit of price hike.
He said the government has already instructed all the DCs to monitor the market on a regular basis so that the consumers do not suffer due to unjustified price hike of essentials.
Turning to the World Trade Directory, the minister said the country has no reason to lag behind while other countries are moving forward fast.
DCCI president Asif Ibrahim said the World Trade Directory is designed to help business entrepreneurs and researchers know about the trade and other economic information between Bangladesh and 176 countries of the world.
He also said this new World Trade Directory will enable the business community to be more involved in the activities of economic development.
“The directory will help customers and suppliers connect each other globally and help track the right business partners, explore new markets and evaluate price trends.”
Mozibur Rahman said this directory is the largest trade directory in the world after CIA and ITC trade maps.
He said information related to trade and commerce are included in this directory which will smoothen the business correspondence of our entrepreneurs.

Member of Bangladesh Tariff Commission Dr Mostafa Abid Khan made a brief presentation on the World Trade Directory.
He highlighted that the objective of this directory is to prove macro-economic, trade and other related basic information.
DCCI former senior vice-presidents MS Shekil Chowdhsury, Abdus Salam, co-conveners of DCCI MS Siddiqui, SM Zillur Rahman, CEO of BUILD Ferdaus Ara Begum, Dr Ferdousi Begum of Ferdousi Biotech Ltd. took part in open discussion.
DCCI senior vice-president Haider Ahmed Khan, directors M Bashir Ullah Bhuiyan, Khairul Majid Mahmud, KMN Manjurul Hoque, Abul Hossain, M Iftekharuddin (Naushad), Absar Karim Chowhdury, M Abu Horaira, Hossain A Sikder and secretary Mustafa Mohiuddin were present.
