Dhaka, July 18 (UNB) – The government on Wednesday re-fixed the price of BSFIC’s packaged sugar at Tk 55 from Tk 60 per kg for the month of Ramadan.
Industries Minister Dilip Barua announced the new price at a press conference at Shilpa Bhaban in the morning.
He said the government decided to cut sugar price by Tk 5 per kilogram to sell in the retail market, aiming to protect consumers’ interest during the holy month of Ramadan and avert its artificial crisis through smooth supply.
The state-run agency has also re-fixed sugar’s wholesale market rate at Tk 50 per kg in instead of Tk 55. “The price of sugar will be Tk 50,000 per metric tonne instead of Tk 55,000 in the wholesale market,” Barua said.
The Industries Minister said the new price would be applicable for Ramadan.
Earlier, the BSFIC and the government faced sharp criticism from different quarters for selling the sweetener at higher price than the market price.
On July 4, Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) launched the sale of packaged sugar at Tk 60 per kg in Dhaka city.
The BSFIC will sell the packaged sugar at two outlets and through two mobile caravans across the city until the fasting month ends so that the market manipulators cannot raise its price.
