News - Mamata declares support for Pranab with 'heavy heart'

Kolkata, July 17 -Chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced she would vote for Pranab Mukherjee in the Presidential polls ending weeks of political debate which way she would move.

"We are taking the decision with a heavy heart," she remarked at the state secretariat on Tuesday afternoon.

"It is misfortune that we could not strike consensus around APJ Abdul Kalam," she said at a media conference.

"We are going to decide on the vice president later on," she added.

"There are two options. One, we would not vote. Two, we vote for somebody. But then whom do we vote for?," she asked rhetorically before announcing her decision.

"We always protest on questions that involves principles. We would continue with that position. That's a basic tenet," she remarked.

Whether Trinamool would support Pranab Mukherjee for the Presidential post became a raging political debate all over the country for the past one month since she announced her own list of candidates for the post, the first name of which was former presidet A P J Abdul Kalam.

She wished long life for Pranab Mukherjee.

Mamata's announcement may ease tension between the Congress and Trinamool party.
