News - PM’s remarks about Yunus unbecoming: BNP
Dhaka, July 17 (UNB) – The main opposition BNP on Tuesday termed unexpected the remarks of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina involving country’s Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus in the World Bank’s Padma Bridge credit deal annulment.

“It can’t be that an international organisation like the World Bank has scrapped the loan deal only because of a single person. People don’t ’expect such comments from a responsible person like Prime Minister,” said BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

He was talking to reporters after placing wreaths at the grave of party founder late president Ziaur Rahman along with the leaders of the newly formed Shariatpur district unit BNP committee.

Addressing a meeting of the central working committee of Awami League at Ganobhaban on Monday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said she had heard that the World Bank would cancel its loan agreement for the Padma Bridge project because of a particular person.

Though the PM did not mention the name of the person, many ruling party leaders on various occasions said Dr Yunus had a hand in the WB deal cancellation.

Refereeing to the PM’s remarks, Fakhrul said Sheikh Hasina has long been making unbecoming remarks about an internationally acclaimed person like Dr Yunus.

“Dr Yunus has outstanding contributions to the global economy. We could have taken his support. Instead of that, the government is maligning Yunus by conducting a propaganda against him which is detrimental to the country,” said Fakhrul, also BNP acting secretary general.

He said the Prime Minister and ministers are making unguarded remarks only to hush up the corruption by government high-ups in the project.

Opposing the government’s move to open two bank accounts for collecting Padma Bridge construction fund, the BNP leader said the government has taken an initiative to collect money for the project like a charitable fund in the name of bank account only to divert people's attention from the corruption allegation.

The Cabinet on Monday decided to open two bank accounts, one for local currency and one for foreign currency, to receive voluntary contributions from people for the construction of the Padma Bridge.

Asked about his party decision to boycott Gazipur-4 by-polls, Fakhrul said the party’s policymakers took the decision not to make controversial the opposition’s ongoing movement for the restoration of caretaker government by participating in the by-election.

BNP standing committee at a meeting on Monday night decided not to participate in any election, including the upcoming Gazipur-4 by-polls, under the present government.
