MANILA, Philippines, JULY 4 (AP/UNB) - The Philippine government has formed a task force to investigate the killing of a Dutch anti-mining and anti-logging activist as suspicions arise about whether he was killed in a plain robbery.

Police say Wilhelm Geertman, who headed a disaster relief group, was gunned down Tuesday outside his office in northern Pampanga province's San Fernando city by one of two motorcycle-riding gunmen who took his bag containing about 1.2 million pesos ($27,900) he had withdrawn from a bank.

An ecumenical bishops' group says the 67-year-old former religious missionary "was a fair target of those whose political and economic interests were affected by his advocacies."

Edwin Lacierda, spokesman for President Benigno Aquino III, said Wednesday that Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo has ordered an investigation into the killing of Geertman.
