Comilla, July 4 (UNB) - At least 81 people were killed and 1,000 others injured in at least 268 road accidents in the district in the last six months, according to official data.

Highway police recorded 268 road accidents in the district from January to June 2012.

The deaths were reported in 68 fatal road accidents. Some 1,000 people were injured in over 200 other road accidents in the district during the period. A total of 44 cases have been filed.

The road accidents killed 18 people in January, 15 in February, 14 in March, seven in April, 11 in May and 16 in June on different roads and highways, including Dhaka-Chittagong highway and Gouripur, Chandina and Chouddagram roads.

Meanwhile, people related to transport sector said the number of people killed and injured in the road crashes in Comilla might be double of the official figure as all the roads are not under the jurisdiction of the highway police.

Belayet Hossain Shikder, Assistant Police Super of Highway Police (eastern zone) said drivers should be well trained while people careful while crossing the roads.

He also suggested that after establishing over bridge at Gouripur in Daudkandi upazila and completion of four-lane Dhaka-Chittagong highway, road accident roads will be reduced to a great extent.
