Tangail, June 30 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday accused opposition BNP of blocking people-oriented development works and unleashing a reign of terror in the country whenever it comes to power.
“Whenever BNP comes to power, it indulges in corruption, killing and patronising militancy,” she told a public meeting at a field on the east side of Bangabandhu Bridge East Railway Station in Kalihati upazila of the district.
Kalihati upazila unit Awami League organised the meeting after the Prime Minister inaugurated the Bangabandhu Bridge East Railway Station-Tarakandi Rail Link earlier in the morning.
The Prime Minister said her party, Awami League, always works for the development of the country and the welfare of its people.
She said her present government has reduced poverty in the country by 10 percent, distributed free textbooks among the students and provided fertiliser at subsidized rates.
“But,” she said, “eighteen people were killed in Tangail during the BNP’s rule simply for demanding fertiliser. Tangail had been made a safe haven of terrorism, militancy and widespread corruption. And the youth had been pushed towards the path of ruination. But Awami League always works for people as Awami League means development.”
Responding to a demand put forward by local Awami League leaders for setting up a medical college in Tangail, Hasina said her government will surely do so if it returns to power in the next election while the Dhaka-Tangail Highway is already being upgraded to a four-lane one.
About the railway, she said a separate Railways Ministry has been set up for overall development of the sector as her government has been working tirelessly to take the country forward.
Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury, Textiles and Jute Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui, and Food and Disaster Management Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque, among others, addressed the meeting.
