Dhaka, June 28 (UNB) – The defamation case filed against beleaguered ATN Bangla chairman Mahfuzur Rahman on Wednesday for reportedly making disgraceful comments against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was withdrawn today (Thursday).
Jubo League Dhaka city unit leader Emdadul Haque who lodged the case with the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Farhana Ferdous withdrew the case on personal grounds.
The Metropolitan Magistrate accepted his petition seeking withdrawal of the case this morning.
The complainant, however, did not elaborate his personal reason which led him to withdraw the case a day after he filed it.
On Wednesday, the court took cognisance of the case and set today for passing the order in this regard as the plaintiff appealed to the court to issue a warrant for the arrest of the ATN Bangla chairman.
According to the case statement, Mahfuzur Rahman maligned the Prime Minister calling her ‘talkative’ in a programme during his recent visit to London. A private television channel aired the report on it on Monday.
At the same programme, the ATN Bangla chairman also claimed that journalist couple Sagar-Runi had been the victims of an "extramarital affair".
Earlier on Tuesday, Home Minister Shahara Khatun said the government would take action after investigation if the ATN Bangla chairman had made any ‘derogatory’ remark against the prime minister.
The journalist community burst into protests after his remarks about the Sagar-Runi murder aired on private TV channels in the first week of this month. Since then, the journalists have been demanding legal action against the ATN Bangla chief.
On Monday, the journalist leaders at a human chain in front of the National Press Club in the city branded the ATN Bangla chairman the ‘enemy of the media’.
He was also declared ‘persona non grata' for his derogatory remarks over the murder of journalist couple Sagar-Runi and stance against the journalist community.
The announcement was made after DUJ leader Jahangir Alam was assaulted by a group of ATN Bangla newsmen as he demanded the arrest of their chairman in connection with the killing of journalist couple Sagar-Runi during a human chain programme in front of the National Press Club on Sunday.
Sagar Sarowar, a news editor at private TV channel Maasranga, and his wife Meherun Runi, a senior reporter at another TV channel, ATN Bangla, were killed in the small hours of February 11 at their rented apartment in the capital’s West Rajabazar.
