Chittagong, June 26 (UNB) – At least 14 people were killed and several others injured in separate incidents of hill slide, wall collapse, lightning and drowning triggered by ceaseless downpour in Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday.

According reports reaching the UNB news desk, seven people were killed in Chittgaong while seven others in Cox’s Bazar.

Incessant rain for the last six days paralyzed normal life in the two districts forcing the authorities to suspend rail and air services.

In Chittagong, seven people were killed and four others injured in separate incidents of wall collapse, landslide and lightning in the port city and Hathazari and Satkania upazilas.

The torrential rains continued for the last six days triggering the landslide and wall collapse, sources said.

According to police and locals three people, including two women and a child, were killed and four others injured as a large chunk of earth from a hill fell on some 50 shanties near Akbar Shaha Mazar under Pahartali Police Station in the evening.

Jasim Uddin, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence in Chittagong, confirmed UNB about it. Seven to eight people are also feared to have remained trapped in the hill slide.

On information, firefighters rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies and rescued the four injured men. The injured were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

In another incident at Ambagan in Khulshi area, a minor boy, Abul Hossain, died on the spot when a wall collapsed on him at about 8pm.

In Hathazari upazila, a young man, Kowser, was buried alive in a hill slide in Hazipara area at about 8.30pm.

In Satkania upazila, two people-- Abu Taher and Moni Akhter-- were killed and their parents injured when a streak of lightning struck them during rain in the afternoon.

UNB Cox’s Bazar correspondent reports: Seven people were killed and several others injured in separate incidents of hill slide and drowning and lightning amid downpour in the district.

Locals said Saddam Hossain, 24, and Rafi Akhter, 12 of North Jhapia village were killed and four others injured when two houses collapsed on them due to hill slide.

In another incident, Sakhina Begum, 45, was killed and her husband Shafiul Alam, of South Jhapua village, injured as a house collapsed on them during rain in the morning.

Ranjit Kumar Barua, officer-in-charge of Moheshkhali thana, confirmed the incidents.

Besides, Abdul Mazid, 35 slipped into a water body at J M Ghat in the Island in the afternoon.

Three others were killed in lightning in Chakoria, Sadar and Pekua upazilas of the district. The identities of the victims could not be known yet.

Meanwhile, heavy downpour inundated low-lying areas of the district, leaving the normal life in disarray.

Nearly one lakh people of around 100 villages remained marooned in the district and road communications at different parts of the district got hampered due to inundation of roads.

In Chittagong, train and air services were also hampered due to the inclement weather. Aviation officials said the bad weather forced them to suspended local and foreign flight operations at the Shah Amanat International Airport.

Train services on Dhaka-Chittagong route were snapped as a railway bridge at Bhatiari collapsed on Tuesday night due to heavy rains.

Mozammel Haque, the chief engineer of Bangladesh Railway (Eastern zone), told UNB around 9:50pm that Railway workers were trying their best to resume the train services between the capital and the Chittagong port city.
