News - Resolve RMG crisis immediately: BNP
Dhaka, June 20 (UNB) – BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday asked the government to take immediate steps to resolve the worsening crisis in the country’s export-oriented garment sector.

“The garment sector is the lifeline of our economy. The government must take immediate measures to break the standoff. As there has been no trade union in the sector, the government will have to negotiate as the custodian,” Fakhrul told a press conference at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.

The press conference was arranged to brief reporters about the party’s demand for the unconditional release of the arrested leaders of BNP and its front organisations, including Swechchasebak Dal president Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal president Sultan Salahuddin Tuku and Jubo Dal general secretary Saiful Islam Nirob, in the case filed for burning a bus driver to death.

BNP also demanded immediate withdrawal of the case terming it a ‘false’ one.

Bus driver Badar Ali Beg, 48, was burnt alive as he was asleep in his bus that set alight in front of Khidmah Hospital in the city’s Khilgaon area on the afternoon of April 21.

Taking a shot at state minister for home Shamsul Islam Tuku for his remarks that the government was playing the role of a referee to overcome the garment sector crisis, Fakhrul said the government should act as a ‘guardian not as a referee’ to solve it.

Turning to the caretaker government issue, he alleged that the government revoked the system to reestablish a one-party rule in the country destroying democracy.

Criticising AL secretary general Syed Ashraf for his remarks that BNP either will have to go to court or get two-thirds majority in the next polls to restore the caretaker government system, Fakhrul said this government must restore it as it annulled it.

Addressing a meeting of Dhaka City AL on Wednesday, Ashraf said there is two ways open for BNP to restore the caretaker system. “Either they (BNP) will have to appeal to the court seeking a review of the decision on the caretaker government or will have to win the election with two-thirds majority.

Reiterating his party’s stand about the interim administration during elections, the BNP spokesman said their party will not participate in the next polls if held under a party government.
