Addl earth filling cost for Padma Bridge project approved
Danish firm wins Tk 445.92 crore Shahjalal Int’l Airport upgradation work

Dhaka, June 20 (UNB) – Cabinet Purchase Committee on Wednesday approved seven purchase proposals including raising the cost of earth filling work of the Padma Bridge project by Tk 14.20 crore.
According to official sources, the original contract value of the earth filling work of the construction yard of the Padma Bridge was Tk 60 crore. The cost of the work has now been raised to Tk 74.20 crore.
The Bridge Division of the Communication Ministry placed the proposal of the additional cost of the earth filling work under title, `the variation order-1’, to the Cabinet purchase body.
The Cabinet Purchase Committee, with Finance Minister AMA Muhith in the chair, gave its nod to the purchase proposals of different projects.
The meeting approved another proposal of the Communications Ministry for increasing the cost of railway track rehabilitation and construction project of Pachuria-Faridpur-Bhanga section. The project’s original contract value was Tk 111.7 crore, but now the contract value has been raised to Tk 128.44 crore by adding Tk 16.74 crore to the cost.
A Food Ministry proposal for importing 50,000 metric tons of wheat from international market also received the Cabinet body nod. Singapore-based M Sons International will supply the bulk wheat at US$ 273.73 per metric ton. The total cost of the bulk wheat supply will be Tk 112.63 crore.
The committee approved a Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry’s contract award proposal to Danish firm Munck Asfalt A/S for upgradation work of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at a contract value of DKK (Danish Kroner) 311 million which is equivalent to Tk 445.92 crore.
The committee, however, rejected another proposal placed by the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry for awarding a contract to Turkish firm Kuanta Insaat Taahhut for 1st phase upgradation work of Cox’s Bazar airport. The Cabinet body rejected the proposal as it found some gross irregularities in the tender procedure.
The Cabinet committee approved another contract proposal for implementing the JICA-funded Eastern Bangladesh Bridge Improvement project. A local firm, Mir Akhtar Hossain won the contract at a cost of Tk 204.25 crore.
Appointment of consultant for the design and supervision work of the Khulna WASA also received the nod of the Cabinet body. Australian firm SMEC Pte won the contract at a value of Tk 51.02 crore.
Another proposal for appointment of joint venture of SMEC International, PES South Korea and SEE Consultant of Bangladesh for the ADB-funded Technical Assistance for Sub-regional Road Transport Project Preparatory Facility received approval in the meeting.
