Rangpur, June 17 (UNB) – A half-day hartal, enforced by the district unit BNP and its front and associate organizations, was observed in the district on Sunday.
Local BNP called the eight-hour-long shutdown protesting re-arrests of four central leaders demanding their immediate release.
Local BNP, Jubo Dal, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Swechchhasebak Dal enforced the general strike also to press for the demand to withdraw all 'false' cases filed against local leaders and workers of BNP.
The four central leaders of the main opposition party were re-arrested at the gate of Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur immediately after they were released on bail in an arson case on Thursday night.
They are: Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, president of Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, its secretary general Mir Sharafat Ali Sapu, Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, president of JCD and Saiful Islam Nirob, Jubo Dal secretary general.
During the hartal, which started at 6 am and ended at 2 pm, private offices, educational institutions, super markets, shops and business establishments remained closed while vehicles including bus, minibus, truck and private cars stayed off the road.
No inter-district bus and night coaches entered or left Rangpur city and plied in routes passing through the district during hartal hours.
A few rickshaws and auto-rickshaws plied on the roads.
Witnesses said picketers damaged at least seven vehicles, including jeep, car, some auto-rickshaws and motorcycles. Police confirmed that a truck, a car and motorbike came under pickets attack and were damaged.
Police picked up Halim, Hossain and Mohammad, activists of Jubo Dal and Biplob, activist of Swechhasebak Dal from different areas of the city during hartal.
