Kurigram, June 16 (UNB) – Deputy Commissioner M Habibur Rahman and his bodyguard were injured as power-hungry people attacked them while demonstrating for electricity in Ulipur upazila on Saturday.

Local sources said residents of several villages in Panchpir area of the upazila have no electricity at their homes for seven days after stealing of three transformers were stolen a week ago.

As the authorities did not take any step to install new transformers even after seven days, agitated people took to the street in the morning and put barricade on Kurigram-Chitalmari road at Panchpir Bazar.

DC M Habibur Rahman who was passing the area at about 11 am tried to pacify the agitated people.

But the power-hungry people started beating him with sticks. They also beat his bodyguard constable Masud as he tried to save the DC, leaving both of them injured.

Badly injured Habibur Rahman was rushed to Kurigram Sadar Hospital where he had to have six stitches in the head. Later, he was shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital following deterioration of his condition.

Police arrested six people—Bachchu Mia, Rafiqul, Lal Mia, Fazlul Haque, Alal Uddin and Abdul Halim—for their involvement in the incident.
