Sylhet, June 15 (UNB) – Eight vehicles, including six stone-laden trucks, a microbus and a auto-rickshaw, plunged into a canal as a bailey bridge over it near Borni in Companyganj upazila collapsed on Friday night, killing a passenger and injuring 10 others.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Haque, 40, of village Ghoramara in the same upazila.

Nandan Kanti, officer-in-charge (inquiry) of Companyganj Police Station, said six stone-laden trucks, a microbus and an auto-rickshaw plunged into the canal as the bailey bridge gave away apparently under the pressure of overloaded vehicles around 9pm.

Vehicular movement on the road remained suspended following the bridge collapse. On information, police and fire brigade members rushed in and launched a rescue drive.

Local people and divers also joined the rescue operation and it was on till filing the report at 11:30pm.  So far, seven people have been rescued and the death toll may go up further, police said.
