WASHINGTON, JUNE 12 (AP/UNB) - An Afghan man who authorities say was one of the world's largest heroin traffickers has been sentenced to life in prison in the United States.

Haji Bagcho was sentenced in federal court in Washington on Tuesday, three years after he was captured and brought to the U.S.

Bagcho was found guilty in March of manufacturing drugs in secret laboratories along Afghanistan's border with Pakistan. Prosecutors say he sent heroin to more than 20 countries, including the U.S. He used proceeds from the drug sales to support the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan.

Bagcho had faced a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in prison.
