News - 37 opposition men sent to jail
Dhaka, June 12 (UNB) – A court here on Tuesday sent 36 mid-level opposition leaders and activists, including ex-JCD president Azizul Bari Helal, to jail on their surrender before it in two cases filed over April hartal violence.

First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Shahidul Islam passed the order rejecting their bail petitions.

Earlier in the day, the opposition men appeared before the court in compliance with a High Court order and sought bails.

On May 15, the High Court granted the opposition men anticipatory bails for four weeks in the two separate cases and asked them to surrender to the designated trial court within the given time.

The two cases were filed with Uttara Police Station on April 21 and April 24 on charge of torching and damaging vehicles in the capital's Uttara area on the eve of an opposition-sponsored hartal.

Earlier, on May 16, 33 key leaders of the BNP-led 18-party alliances, including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, were sent to jail in another arson attack case.
