Dhaka, June 10 (UNB) - At least 9,000 additional police will be on duty in the capital, especially around BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, to avert any unpleasant incident during and after the opposition’s mass rally on Monday.
Official sources said plainclothes police and the elite force Rab alongside members of different intelligence agencies will also remain on high alert with bomb disposal units to foil any subversive act in the capital.
Police have already set up check-posts at different entry points in the capital and vehicles were allowed to enter the city only after vigorous checking and intense interrogations after Sunday evening, creating severe traffic congestions.
Witnesses said long queues were seen from Tongi to Abdullahpur, Amin Bazar to Gabtoli and Chittagong Road to Jatrabari and on both bridges over the Buriganga River.
The 18-party alliance is going to hold the mass rally in the capital as opposition leader Khaleda Zia’s three-month ultimatum to the government to restore the caretaker government system went unheeded.
The deadline expired today (Sunday).
The BNP-led 18-party alliance is scheduled to announce their next course of action from Monday’s rally.
