Dhaka, June 6 (UNB) – Accusing the leader of the opposition of creating political instability in the country, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday urged her not to fish in the troubled water.
“If you (Khaleda) believe in democracy, have confidence in people, you should speak for them (people) standing beside them. But, don’t burn people to death,” she said adding that there would be nothing good if she tries to fish in the troubled water.
The Prime Minister was addressing a discussion meeting marking the historic 7th June (Six-Point Day) at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the evening. The ruling Awami League organised the discussion meeting.
The historic 7th June commemorating the Six-Point Movement seeking full autonomy to erstwhile East Pakistan will be observed on Thursday.
On this day, in 1966, Awami League under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (later Bangabandhu) had enforced a daylong hartal throughout the erstwhile East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, against the exploitation and deprivation of the people of the province by the central authority in Pakistan.
The Six-Point Movement was a Bengali nationalist movement in East Pakistan spearheaded by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which eventually led to the liberation of Bangladesh.
Criticising the opposition leader’s budget deliberations ahead of the formal placing of the national budget in parliament, Sheikh Hasina said Khaleda Zia in her budget ‘thoughts’ termed the two-year term of the previous caretaker government ‘unconstitutional’.
“On one hand, she (Khaleda) termed the caretaker government unconstitutional, and burned sleeping people to death in a bus and kept on creating political instability on the other,” the Prime Minister alleged.
Turning down the opposition leader’s GDP growth projection of below six percent, the premier categorically said the GDP growth has been over 6 percent and it would continue to remain over six percent.
Chaired by AL presidium member and deputy leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, the programme was addressed, among others, by Textiles and Jute Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui, Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury, Posts and Telecommunications Minister Raziuddin Ahmed Raju, PM’s adviser Dr Syed Modasser Ali, AL joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, organising secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, AL Dhaka city unit general secretary Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, AL information and research secretary Adv Afzal Hossain.
“Whatever the Awami League government is doing is doing only for the country’s people,” the Prime Minister said questioning, “What’s the pain of the opposition leader in that?”
Referring to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s remark that the upcoming budget going to be the ambitious one, Sheikh Hasina said it could be ambitious in its bid to alleviate poverty, ensuring economic emancipation, ensuring food security, building houses for the homeless, ensuring healthcare services, ensuring education for each and every child.
Turning to the increase in ADP size, she said that the increase is meant for overall development of the country and its people, but that cannot make the opposition leader happy. “The rise in the ADP size is her (Khaleda) pain. Her only thought is whether she is there been in power and whether she can make money,”
Hasina said although the opposition leader speaks against corruption, but she (Khaleda) herself indulges in corruption. “Even she whitened black money giving fine…her two sons also siphoned off money abroad.”
“They had pushed the country into limitless corruption…every day sacks full of money had reached ‘Hawa Bhaban’,” the Prime Minister alleged.
Blaming BNP for plunging the country into double digit inflation during its rule, the Prime Minister said her government has been able to slow down the inflation rate to single digit.
Listing various development programmes and activities taken by her government, Sheikh Hasina said her government has been maintaining GDP growth over 6 percent despite recession, increased per capita income, distributed free textbooks up to secondary level, increased the wages of the garment workers and continued subsidy in agriculture.
Reiterating her strong resolve to ensure economic emancipation of the country’s people, the Prime Minister renewed her desire to put the country back on the track of ‘Sonar Bangla’ as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and make it a middle-income country by 2021.
