Sherpur, June 3 (UNB) – The BNP-sponsored half-day hartal was observed in the district peacefully on Sunday.
The district unit of BNP enforced the six-hour strike protesting a court order sending nine local BNP leaders to jail in a vehicle torching case.
Additional police were deployed at the strategic points of the town to fend off any untoward incident. However, pro-hartal supporters were hardly visible on the streets.
Educational institutions, shops, banks and other offices remained opened while plying of vehicles was almost normal during the hartal hours
Earlier, police raided the residences of district BNP president Advocate Saiful Islam Kalam and general secretary Mahmudul Haque Rubel on Saturday night.
No one was arrested during the hartal hours, police said.
On May 31, district BNP vice president Abdur Razzak Ashish, Sadar upazila BNP president Fazlul Haq Badsha and seven other leaders of Jubo Dal and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal appeared before a speedy trial tribunal court here with a bail prayer in connection with the case.
The case was filed against them for torching a bus in the district town on the night of May 16, a day before BNP-enforced countrywide hartal.
Judge Iqbal Bahar turned down their bail prayer and sent them to jail at noon.
