News - Body formed to restore discipline in transport sector
Dhaka, May 30 (UNB) - A six-member committee, headed by joint secretary of the Roads Division Sajjadul Hasan, has been formed to make recommendations to restore discipline in the chaotic transport sector.

The committee was constituted at an inter-ministerial meeting held at the Home Ministry with Home Minister Shahara Khatun in the chair on Wednesday.

Communications Minister Obaidul Qauder, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, State Minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, BRTA Chairman Ayubur Rahman and representatives from the police, transport owners and workers were present.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Home Minister Shahara Khatun said a recommendation committee aimed at restoring discipline and ensuring a better coordination in the transport sector was formed in today’s meeting.

A deputy secretary-level official of the Home Ministry, Assistant  Inspector General (AIG) Jahirul Islam, Khandaker Enayet, secretary general of Road Transport Owners’ Association and labour leader Osman Gani will be there in the committee. A deputy director-level official of BRTA will act as its member secretary.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within a month.

The Home Minister said the meeting asked all the vehicle owners to install digital number plates in their vehicles within the next five months.

The meeting renewed its earlier directive calling on the vehicle owners, especially those of goods carriers, to get GPS installed in their vehicles. It also asked the police to take steps to remove human haulers like Nasiman, Bhutbuti and Easy-bike from highways as those are vulnerable to accident.

Referring to vehicles plying without license, the minister said the government is taking steps in this regard and those will be phased out.

When her attention was drawn to press reports on recent torture on journalists by police, Shahara Khatun said, “Investigations into the incidents taken place recently are going on and steps will be taken against those to be found responsible”.
