Bagerhat, May 30 (UNB) – Three suspected robbers were killed in a fierce gunfight with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in the Sundarbans under Sharankhola upazila on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Nobanad Haldar, 40, second-in-command of notorious gang ‘Akash Bahini’, his cohorts Fakhrul Hossain, 38, and Mihir, 35.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Rab-8 raided a hideout of robbers on the bank of Shapla Canal in Sundarbans east zone at about 10:00am, Lt Col Farid, commanding officer of Rab-8, told UNB.
Sensing presence of the Rab men, the robbers opened fire on them, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate that triggered the gunfight, which continued for about 35 minutes.
The three robbers were caught in the line of fire and died on the spot during the gun battle, the Rab official said.
However, the other members of the gang managed to flee the scene. Later, the law enforcers recovered the three bullet-hit bodies.
The elite force also recovered a trawler, nine firearms, 68 bullets and huge rice and pulse from the robbers’ den.
