News - Jamaat-enforced half-day hartal ends in Ctg
Chittagong, May 30 (UNB) -A half-day hartal enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami protesting a court order sending its city unit Ameer ANM Shamsul Islam, MP to jail passed off peacefully on Wednesday.

Police arrested 21 activists of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat, from different parts of the city while picketing.

Pickets vandalized several vehicles at Chawkbazar, Muradpur, Bahaddarhat, Badurtala and Pahartali during hartal hours.

Most of the vehicles stayed off the streets fearing vandalism.

Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate M Mahbubur Rahman, who had granted him bail on Monday, sent the Jamaat leader to jail on Tuesday cancelling his bail in a vehicle torching case.

On May 13, the case was filed with Khulsi Police Station under the Speedy Trial Act for torching the vehicle at Wasa Intersection in the port city during a clash with police.

During a hearing on the case on Tuesday, the court cancelled the bail granted to the MP following an appeal made by a public prosecutor.

Earlier, on Monday, the same court granted an ad-interim bail to Shamsul Islam until June 5 in the case as the city Jamaat chief sought bail after appearing before the court in compliance with a High Court order.

Earlier, on May 20, the High Court granted an anticipatory bail to the Jamaat leader in the case and asked him to surrender before the lower court in a month.

On May 13, the six cases were filed against over 2,000 leaders and activists of the 18-party alliance in connection with the violent clashes between police and the opposition activists over staging a mass procession of the alliance in the city.

Soon after the court order, the agitated Jamaat and Shibir men brought out protest rallies in different areas of the city on Tuesday.

They also held a rally at Cheragi Pahar intersection and announced the 6 am-12 pm hartal for today (Wednesday) protesting the court order.
