Nizami, Quader Mollah indicted for war crimes

News - Nizami, Quader Mollah indicted for war crimes
Dhaka, May 28 (UNB) – Detained Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami and its assistant secretary general Quader Mollah were indicted on Monday for their involvement in crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation in 1971.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 framed charges against Nizami while the International Crimes Tribunal-2 indicted Quader Mollah.

The three-member ICT-1, headed by its Chairman Justice M Nizamul Huq, also set July 1 to begin trial against Nizami with the opening statement by the prosecution.

The Chairman of the tribunal read out the charges against Nizami and asked him whether he was guilty or not. Nizami pleaded not guilty and sought justice.

On the other hand, Chairman of the ICT-2 Justice ATM Fazle Kabir read out the charges against Quader Mollah and fixed June 20 for beginning the trial.

Nizami , the then Al Badr commander-in- chief, was charged with 16 specific crimes that include genocide, murder, conspiracy, planning, incitement, loot, rape, arson, persecution, destruction of property, complicity and killing of journalists, intellectuals and cultural personalities in collaboration with occupation Pakistan army and its auxiliary forces like Razakar, Al Badr and Al Shams.

Known as butcher Quader Mollah, also a leader of then Al Badr, a military outfit of Jamaat, was charged with six specific offences that include genocide, murder, rape, arson in Mirpur, Mohammadpur and Keraniganj areas in association with his sidekicks, including Razakars, and participating or aiding the Pakistani occupation forces in doing such heinous crimes during the Liberation War.
