Final Algeria vote results give opposition gain
ALGIERS, Algeria, May 25 (AP/UNB) - Algeria's Constitutional Council has given final seat tallies from the May 10 parliamentary elections resulting in a slight gain for the opposition.
The pro-government National Liberation Front lost 17 seats, but with its ally the National Democratic Rally, still holds a commanding majority in the 462-member parliament with 204 and 69 seats respectively.
The big winners from the readjustment were the secular Socialist Forces Front, which jumped from 21 to 27 seats and the leftist Workers' Party, which jumped from 17 to 24 seats.
An alliance of Islamist parties gained two seats for a total of 50.
The new parliament will have its inaugural session Saturday.
Algeria bucked the Arab Spring trend in its election with Islamists doing poorly and the parties of the status quo winning overwhelmingly.
