News - Don’t lose temper without valid reason: Minister to RMG workers
Dhaka, May 22 (UNB) - Labour Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Tuesday urged the readymade garment (RMG) workers not to pay heed to any rumour and not to lose temper without valid reason to maintain a peaceful atmosphere in this key sector.

He said the government would introduce trade union in the RMG sector once both the owners and workers are agreed on it.

“Practicing trade union is fundamental right as per the Constitution. We’ll ensure it…the owners shouldn’t be afraid of that,” Mosharraf Hossain told a views-exchange meeting at BGMEA conference room on the present situation in the RMG sector.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) arranged the meeting with its president M Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin in the chair.

Shipping Minister M Shajahan Khan, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on Labour Ministry M Israfil Alam, FBCCI president AK Azad, DG of Industrial Police Abdus Salam, Jatiya Sramik League general secretary Roy Ramesh Chandra, BKMEA acting president M Hatem and Sramik leader Shah M Abu Jafar, among others, took part in the discussion.

Mosharraf Hossain said an ILO delegation will arrive here tomorrow (Wednesday) and discuss the trade union issue with them with focus on training for the workers’ leaders.

AK Azad suggested formation of a special committee comprising owners, workers, trade union leaders and government representatives to immediately resolve any crisis in the RMG sector when arises.

He said any crisis in the RMG sector could be resolved through joint efforts by the workers and owners.

Azad sees conspiracy both from home and abroad behind the recent unrest in the RMG sector.

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan said trade union should be introduced in the RMG sector to avert any unrest and conspiracy.

He alleged that political opponents were also involved in the recent unrest in the RMG sector. “Not that it’s because of only for owners and workers.”

The BGMEA president said trained and educated workers are a must for introducing trade union. “We’re working to introduce trade union.”
