CANBERRA, Australia, MAY 21 (AP/UNB) - An Australian lawmaker has claimed in Parliament that his enemies had framed him to make it appear that he had misused a union credit card to pay prostitutes and cover personal expenses.
Craig Thomson was suspended from the ruling Labor Party last month over allegations first raised in the media in 2009 that he had misused union money while he was head of the Health Services Union before he entered Parliament in 2007.
Thomson spoke Monday after the opposition demanded he make a statement to Parliament about a recent investigation. The government-appointed union regulator concluded Thomson had misused the credit card to pay prostitutes, withdraw cash and cover his own campaign expenses.
