
Dhaka, May 17 (UNB) - Claiming Thursday’s countrywide daylong hartal a success, BNP’s front ranking leader Nazrul Islam Khan said their current movement will continue to protect national interest and mitigate various public sufferings and also for the return of missing M Ilias Ali alive.
He said the ongoing movement will continue to free people from the hands of the oppressive government, as well as for the withdrawal of “false” cases designed to harass and release of arrested opposition leaders and workers including tge top leaders of BNP-led 18-party alliance.
Addressing a press conference at the BNP central office at Nayapaltan at 5:10 pm today (Thursday), Nazrul Islam Khan said the next course of the opposition movement will be announced tomorrow (Friday).
He said leaders of the 18-party alliance will meet this (Thursday) evening at the Gulshan office of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’ to take decision about the next programme.
The BNP standing committee member narrated various incidents of arrest and attack by “police, Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League” activists on the leaders and workers of BNP and its allies in a number of districts including in the capital during the daylong shutdown today.
He claimed that thousands of leaders and workers were arrested and injured as well as “false and harassing” cases were filed across the country.
Asked about the remarks of ruling Awami League leaders that the opposition will not be able to realise their demands the way it is carrying out movement, Nazrul Islam said it would have been better if they had suggested how the movement should be carried out.
He, however, said BNP does not like, nor it has any wish to carry out agitation with `logi-boitha’ like the Awami League.
The BNP leader said that they along with the people will forge movement to free the country from the “repressive and corrupt government” and to arrange next general election under non-party caretaker government.
Asked about the absence of any leader of other components of 18-party alliance at Wednesday’s and today’s press conference, he said when senior leaders of BNP cannot enter its own office how the leaders of other parties will come in the face of police cordon.
On behalf of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, Nazrul congratulated and thanked people and the opposition leaders and workers for observing the hartal spontaneously across the country defying the “cruel repression” of the government.
BNP leaders Abdullah Al Noman, Barkatullah Bulu, M Shahjahan, Mizanur Rahman Minu, Zainul Abdin Farruque, Abdus Salam and Shirin Sultana were, among others, present at the press conference.
