Dhaka, May 17 (UNB) - President Zillur Rahman on Thursday called for taking public and private initiatives in the telecommunication and information technology (IT) sector with a view to changing the fortunes of the rural people as well as that of entire Bangladesh.

The President made the exhortation while addressing the inaugural function of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day-2012, organized by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication, at Hotel Radisson in the city.

The President in his address noted that tremendous progress has taken place in the telecommunication sector in the light of the government’s `Digital Bangladesh’ programme that greatly expanded the use of mobile phone in the country.

“Each mobile phone is a mini computer. Using this (mobile phone), we can change fortunes of all rural people and also of entire Bangladesh,” he said.

Zillur Rahman also called for making telecommunication and information technology more accessible and user-friendly so that the ordinary people, especially women could avail the opportunities.

“So, let us change the whole of Bangladesh utilizing the telecommunication and information technology through public and private efforts,” he said.

Referring to this year’ theme of the World Telecommunication Day - `Women and Girls in ICT’, the President said it is very significant in socioeconomic context of the country.
