Dhaka, May 13 (UNB) - BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said the survey report by a US-based organisation that revealed 77 percent people have confidence on Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is ‘far from truth’.
“The government, which is now at the end of its tenure, is misleading people with such a survey report,” he said replying to a question at a press conference at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office at 8:30 pm.
The press conference was basically arranged to protest attacks by ‘police and the ruling party goons’ on the leaders and workers of BNP and its allies in different districts, including Chittagong, during their protest rallies and procession as part of the countrywide programme.
Fakhrul warned that if government obstructs the BNP-led 18-party alliance ‘peaceful mass’ procession in the capital tomorrow (Monday), it will have to shoulder the responsibility for any consequence.
Asked whether the accused leaders of BNP and its allies will surrender before the lower court by May 16 as directed by the High Court, Fakhrul said they will go to the lower court and accept its decision.
He said they will simultaneously carry out their legal battle and street movement.
Asked about the probe committee report that former Railways Minister Suranjit Sengupta was not involved in the recent cash scandal, Fakhrul said they were not at all surprised with such a report.
He said they did not expect that the probe committee formed by the officials of Railway Minister would unveil any corruption by the minister of that ministry. He said the testimony of the car driver of the APS of the former Railways Minister was not taken. “Sengupta still a minister.”
Replying to another question about the BNP top leaders who had gone into hiding, including Fakhrul, following the filing of cases against them, he said avoiding arrest by political leaders is a recognised strategy.
He said avoiding arrest by them was their party’s decision.
In response to a question about BNP’s joining the upcoming budget session in parliament, he said the BNP’s parliamentary party will decide it.
Fakhrul strongly condemned and protested the attack on BNP’s leaders and workers by the ‘ruling party goons’ and police and arrest in different districts of the country, particularly Chittagong.
He said over 100 leaders and workers, including Abdullah Al Noman, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Jafrul Islam Chowdhury were injured in the attack in Chittagong.
He said the government needs to be tolerant and it should give scope to the opposition to exercise their minimum democratic rights, which is necessary for the continuation of democracy.
BNP leaders Fazlur Rahman Patal, M Shahjahan, Abdul Latif Johnny, Asadul Karim Shahin, Shamimul Rahman Shamim, Shirin Sultana and Sultan Salahuddin Tuku were, among others, present at the press conference.
