News - Over 40 injured as violence flares up at Ashulia
Savar, May 13 (UNB) - Over 40 people, including cops, were injured as  garment workers clashed with police again on Sunday morning following Saturday’s violence over the death rumour of a fellow-worker.

The unruly workers blocked Abdullahpur bypass at 6 am and vandalised and torched nearly 30 passing vehicles.

Vehicular movement on the highway remained suspended for nearly five hours, causing immense sufferings to commuters.

Several hundred workers of over 100 garment factories of Ashulia, Narsinghapur and Jamgarh areas in separate groups carried out the fresh attacks on the law enforcers and vandalised vehicles amid chase and counter-chase.

Police also lobbed teargas shells and fired rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.

OC (investigation) of Ashulia Police Station Kamal Hossain was among the five injured cops.

Earlier, on Saturday, over 100 people, including six journalists and 15 policemen, were injured in a fierce clash between garment workers and cops at Ashulia here following the death rumour of a fellow-worker.

On Thursday evening, Hamim Group director Mofakkharul Islam allegedly beat up Salman and handed him over to police as he used cell phone during working hours.

The fellow-workers burst into anger and went berserk when they heard that Salman was ‘tortured to death by the authorities’.
