
Dhaka, May 5 (UNB) – A special court here on Saturday sentenced 309 BDR (now Border Guard Bangladesh) jawans of 36 Rifles Battalion to different jail terms ranging from four months to seven years for their involvement in the bloody mutiny at Pilkhana headquarters in 2009.
The three-member Special Court-10, led by Director (Admin) of BGB headquarters Col Khandakar Obaidul Ahsan, started delivering the verdict at about 10 am and concluded it at about 12:45 pm.
Two other members of the special court were Lt Col Ayub Chowdhury and Major AMN Fazlul Azam. Deputy Attorney General Kazi Ijarul Haque assisted the court as a representative of the Attorney General.
The court acquitted sepoy Abdur Rashid as charges brought against him were not proved.
Fifty-two of the convicts were jailed for seven years, two for six years and six months, 13 for six years, 31 for five years and two months, 53 for four years, five for three years and six months, 58 for three years, three for two years and six months, 50 for two years, 37 for one year, three for six months and two for four months.
The trial of 310 BDR rebels under the 36 Rifles Battalion and its affiliated units started on March 15, 2010 at the special court set up at the Darbar Hall of the BGB headquarters at Pilkhana.
A total of 119 witnesses made depositions before the special court which delivered the verdict after holding hearings for 46 days.
A total of 73 people, including 57 army officers, were killed during the bloody mutiny at Pilkhana on February 25-26 in 2009.
Hundreds of BDR men rose up in armed revolt at Darbar Hall on February 25 during the three-day-long ‘BDR Week’ inside the Pilkhana headquarters.
They staged the mutiny over low pay and poor condition, and the uprising sparked off mutinous demonstrations in other establishments of the paramilitary border force across the country.
The mutiny finally ended the next day (February 26) with the surrender of the firearms and grenades through negotiations between the government and the BDR rebels.
After the mutiny, the BDR was renamed as Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
