Dhaka, Apr 22 (UNB) - The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports on Monday will hold a walkathon and a protest rally in the city to press home its seven-point demand, including cancellation of rental power plant agreements signed with different companies.

The walkathon will begin from the National Press Club at 4 pm and end at Motijheel, parading different city streets. Committee leaders, political leaders and activists, and representatives from rights organisations will join the walkathon and the rally.

The committee is currently demanding reopening and repair of all state-run power plants and cancelling the agreement with ConocoPhillips to ensure the cent percent ownership of the state on the Bay.

On June 16 last year, the government signed a production-sharing contract (PSC) with US firm ConocoPhillips for the exploration of oil and gas in the deep sea ignoring widespread protests by various organisations.

The other demands of the committee include cancellation of proposed coal-based power plant at Rampal, Bagerhat near the Sundarbans to protect the world’s largest mangrove forest from environmental peril, formation of a new law banning mineral resource export and full implementation of the Phulbari Agreement.
