News - Chief prosecutor seeks transfer of 3 cases to ICT-2; hearing Monday
Dhaka, Apr 15 (UNB) - The chief prosecutor on Sunday moved a petition before the International Crimes Tibunal-1 seeking transfer of the pending three war crimes cases facing by detained Jamaat-e-Islami leaders M Kamaruzzaman and Abdul Quader Mollah, and former BNP MP Abdul Alim, now on bail, to the newly-constituted ICT-2.

After receiving the Ordinance along with its gazette notification on the amendment to the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act 1973 that provides such a provision, chief prosecutor Golam Arif Tipu placed the petition.

The legal position of the three cases awaits defence counsel’s argument on charge hearing against the accused as the tribunal took cognisance of the charges of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War ‘perpetrated’ by them.

The matter will come up for hearing on Monday, said the three-member tribunal headed by Justice M Nizamul Huq.

On March 22, the government constituted the ICT-2 for the speedy disposal of war crimes cases.

On March 25, the second three-member International Crimes Tribunal, constituted with Justice ATM Fazle Kabir as its chairman, started pretrial judicial proceedings at the Old High Court building.

On April 3, the ICT-2, upon prosecution plea, issued an arrest warrant against war crimes–suspect Maulana Abul Kalam Azad alias Bachchu Razakar and asked the DMP commissioner to report on compliance within 24 hours.
