Dhaka, Apr 8 (UNB) - The High Court on Sunday issued rule upon the government and the Dhaka University authorities to explain in four weeks why they should not be asked to immediately hold the overdue election to Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu).
It also asked the respondents to explain why their failure to hold the Ducsu election in time should not be declared illegal.
The education secretary, DU vice-chancellor, proctor, treasurer and registrar have been made respondents to the petition.
An HC division bench comprising Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice M Khurshid Alam Sarkar passed the orders following a pending public interest litigation writ petition filed by a group of DU students who are being deprived of exercising their democratic rights for the last two decades.
On March 21, the PIL petitioners filed the writ petition with the HC seeking directives upon the authorities concerned for taking immediate steps to hold election to Ducsu.
Advocate Manzill Murshid appeared for the petitioners while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam for the government.
