
Shariatpur, Feb 22 (UNB) - Cultivation of Boro paddy, maize, nut and summer vegetables along river banks is gaining popularity among the farmers in three upazilas of the district.
Sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said a good number of farmers have made a good return by cultivating Boro, maize, nut and vegetables along the river banks with a small investment in the last year.
They have also brought vast tracts of land along the river banks under cultivation in Gosairhat, Naria and Jajira upazilas this year.
The DAE has set a target of producing 19,500 tonnes of Boro paddy by cultivating 4,200 hectares of land while 1,540 tonnes of nut by cultivating 1,000 hectares, 175 tonnes of maize from 150 hectares and 10,500 tonnes of vegetables by cultivating 700 hectares of land along the river banks of Padma and Meghna.
The farmers of the three upazilas have reaped good harvest by cultivating Boro paddy, maize, nut and other varieties like datashak, lalshak, pumpkin arum, basil, cucumber, brinjal, gourd, lady’s finger and sweet potato.
Abul Bashar of Palarchar village under Jajira upazila told UNB correspondent that he got good yield of Boro paddy from the Padma riverside last year.
“We need not use fertilizer and pesticides to cultivate vegetables along the river bank land,” he added.
