Dhaka, Feb 13 (UNB) - Apparel exporters on Monday sought quick introduction of freight trains on Dhaka-Chittagong railway to expedite export-import container delivery.

They demanded that the Kamalapur Inland Container Depot (ICD) be made truly functional to expedite container delivery.

The apparel exporters put forward the demand at a meeting with Railways Minister Suranjit Sengupta at the latter’s Rail Bhaban office.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president M Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, first vice president Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, second vice president M Siddiqur Rahman and vice president SM Mannan Kochi were, among others, present at the meeting.

“It takes 15 to 18 days to move a container from Chittagong to Dhaka because we need to take serial numbers…the delay hurts our business. So, we demand more container carrying trains to quicken the container delivery,” Nasir Uddin Chowdhury told UNB after the meeting.

The BGMEA delegation urged the Railways Minister to take steps for improving the railways’ services, increasing locomotives and skilled workforce, managing modern equipment and appointing more locomasters for better railway services on the Dhaka-Chittagong route.

They also demanded steps for introducing Narayanganj-Laksam cord line to cut Dhaka-Chittagong distance which is now 320 kilometers. The BGMEA leaders think that it will help reduce the distance by 80 kilometers.
“The minister listened to us and was positive about our demands,” Nasir Uddin said.

About the BGMEA demands, Suranjit said the cord line on Narayanganj-Laksam route is under the active consideration of the government.

Suranjit urged the BGMEA leaders to come forward under Public Private Partnership (PPP) for the development of railways.

He also assured them of taking steps to ensure required facilities through modernisation of Airport railway station.
