Dhaka, Jan 6 (UNB) - The plan for the development of Comilla City Corporation (CCC) will be worked out in consultation with its residents as the corporation belongs to them, said newly elected Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku.
“I don’t believe in Awami League-BNP grouping...I only believe in development. We need development,” Nagorik Committee-backed elected CCC Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku told UNB in an interview over phone on Friday.
He credited the people of Comilla for his landslide victory against the ruling Awami League-backed contender Afzal Khan by around 30,000 votes.
“I’m ready to listen to people, resolve their problems and see a developed Comilla through coordinated efforts,” the CCC polls hero said.
Sakku, who had earlier resigned as joint secretary general of Comilla district (south) BNP to contest the elections boycotted by his party, said he would soon sit with the all elected ward councillors and identify the problems of their respective wards.
Replying to a question, he said he finds traffic jam and water-logging as the major problems and these will get priority in
his action plan.
He said he would meet the common people every month to listen to their problems and will take ideas from them for the development of Comilla.
Replying to a question, Sakku said he would soon meet BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia. “Let’s these formalities go first. Since the sworn-in will take place in Dhaka, I’ll meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, too.”
On the use of electronic voting machines (EVM), he said, “I was a bit confused. Apprehension was there. But it went well since the Election Commission was neutral.” The new mayor termed the polls peaceful and neutral.
He, however, said the Election Commission should think more to introduce EVM in general election.
It was the first time that electronic voting machines (EVM) were used in all polling centres in an election. Also for the first time was the application of webcam surveillance at all centres.
On the government move to form ‘city government’ in Comilla and Rangpur, he said, “I’m not aware of city government. I’ll get the idea once the government introduces it.”
About the other mayoral contestants, he said two of the contestants are like his big brothers and other two are like his younger brothers.“If they come to my office, we’ll be able to think together for the development of Comilla.”
He also said he is ready to return to his party if it wants to take him back. “I’ll take party support to serve the people of Comilla. I had resigned as I didn’t want to embarrass my party.”
In the just held elections, Sakku polled 65,577 while his rival Afzal, joint convener of Comilla district AL, got 36,471 votes. Of
the 1,69,273 voters, 1,27,072 (75%) cast their ballots.
The outcome of the Comilla polls, which coincided with the third anniversary of the AL-led government, is apparently quite
embarrassing for the ruling alliance.
It is the second defeat of ruling party-backed candidates in a little over two months in city corporation polls. In the last year's October 30 Narayanganj City Corporation polls, AL-backed mayoral hopeful Shamim Osman suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Selina Hayat Ivy.
