Secretaries to give 1 festival bonus for Padma Bridge construction

Dhaka, July 18 (UNB) - All secretaries of the government will donate their one festival bonus for the construction of Padma Bridge. The donation will be made in two installments - one installment will be given from Eid-ul-Fitr bonus which the government servants will receive along with their salary before Eid-ul-Fitr next month while the second installment from their Eid-ul-Azha bonus which they will get before the second largest Muslim festival in October. The decision came at a meeting of the Committee of Secretaries held at the Bangladesh Secretariat in the afternoon with Cabinet Secretary M Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan in the chair. Briefing reporters after the meeting, Musharraf said the government secretaries have spontaneously taken the decision at the Secretaries` Committee meeting following a decision taken at a cabinet meeting held on Monday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair which decided to receive voluntary contributions from people for the construction of the 2.25-billion-dollar Padma Multi-purpose Bridge Project with local fund. He said the donation to be made by the secretaries will be deposited with two bank accounts opened by the government to receive voluntary contributions from people for the construction of the 6.15-kilometer-long Padma Bridge. Earlier, the cabinet at a regular weekly meeting chaired by the Prime Minister on Monday decided to open two A/Cs in two scheduled banks, one for local currency and one for foreign currency to receive donation from cross-section of people, including the government servants, to implement the much-awaited project. The cabinet decided to open the two bank accounts following the huge enthusiasm shown by the people of all strata to contribute voluntarily for the construction of the country’s longest multipurpose bridge over the Padma River. The Prime Minister also directed the Finance Ministry to formulate necessary guidelines for the management of the donated money to ensure transparency and accountability. The two accounts have been opened to receive donations from expatriate Bangladeshis through the Foreign Currency Account while local donations to be received through the local currency account. All the secretaries attended today’s meeting.
