Dhaka, July 18 (UNB) - Bangladesh Bank will always be there with the government in implementing any project like Padma Bridge if it serves the interest of people, its governor Dr Atiur Rahman said on Wednesday. “If the intention of the government is public welfare, the Bangladesh Bank will surely be there with it,” he told reporters when his attention was drawn to BB’s support to construct the Padma Bridge through providing fund from its own sources.Atiur said Padma Bridge would bring in enormous financial benefits to the country and the central bank would like to be part of it.He was responding to queries from the reporters after announcing the monetary policy for July-December period at Jahangir Alam Conference Hall at the BB headquarters. The central bank chief said since it will take time to start work on the Padma Bridge project, there will not be much impact during the next six month’s monetary policy period. “The government is also active in collecting funds from different sources.” Atiur said the central bank has already taken steps to increase remittance inflow and cut unnecessary imports to maintain a healthy reserve. He also said the banks would get required support from the central bank to issue bonds and bring in more remittance for this purpose.Referring to BB’s role in helping the government procure fertilisers and fuel, Atiur said the central bank would continue such functions for public welfare and economic prosperity. On July, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told Parliament that the government would build the Padma Bridge with its own funds and the construction work will begin in the current fiscal year. She said the mega project, estimated to cost around Tk 23,000 crore, will be completed within the fiscal 2015-16.
